How Much Pizza Sauce to Use?
There’s no firm rule for how much sauce you should use to make pizza, but as a general rule of thumb: use about ¼ to â…“ cup of pizza sauce for a 10- to 12-inch pizza.
Why?
- Not enough sauce = dry, bland pizza
- Too much sauce = soggy crust
Keep in mind that amounts will vary depending on how thick your pizza crust is. Use a bit less sauce for thin crust pizza and feel free to use a bit more sauce for thicker crusts.
Tips for Freezing Leftover Pizza Sauce
- Cool completely: Let the sauce cool to room temperature before transferring to the freezer.
- Portion it: Freeze in portions so you can thaw and use what you need when you’re ready.
- Use small freezer bags, silicone moulds or ice cube trays to portion it.
- Freezer-Safe Containers: Make sure to use choose airtight containers or resealable freezer bags to prevent freezer burn.
- Label: Label and date your containers so you know to use it within the optimal time frame (3 months or less).
- Thaw: Thaw overnight in the fridge. If you’re in a rush, reheat from frozen by gently warming the sauce up on the stovetop.

Notes
- For a smoother sauce, blend your tomatoes in a food processor before cooking or the entire sauce with an immersion blender after cooking. Alternatively, you can use passata in place of canned tomatoes.
- Whole, peeled tomatoes are ideal because they break down easier than chopped tomatoes. They are usually have a much better flavor since they are minimally processed.
