Thick, decadent, and deceptively healthful. This chocolate avocado mousse is whipped up in minutes with clean, wholesome ingredients that will impress even the pickiest of palates.
This.
Avocado
Cocoa Powder
Sweetener (use agave or maple for vegan, but you can use honey as well)
Espresso Powder
This is one fail proof dessert that is worth definitely worth trying, especially if you’re trying to stick to a cleaner diet.
I remember my mom used to have this cookbook called Deceptively Delicious that was basically a cookbook designed to trick your kid into eating vegetables that they would otherwise side eye before chucking to the floor. It had chickpea cookies, cauliflower mac n cheese, broccoli tater tots etc etc. This chocolate avocado mousse fits perfectly into that category of deceptively delicious. I may not have picky kids, but I do stand a better chance at getting my husband to eat certain foods if he doesn’t realize they are there. I shoo him out of the kitchen on a daily basis just so he won’t see what ingredients I’m using to stop him from forming any premature judgements.
The first time I made this I made sure to shut him from the kitchen for the five minutes it took to make and then made him eat it and try to guess what was in it. Now- two things you should know about Mike. Number one: he likes his chocolate. Like, he really likes chocolate. Dark. Number two: he does not like avocados. Which I can’t get over because if I like it then obviously he should like it, right?! (And yet I don’t mind because it means I don’t have to share with him.) Even though his opinion of avocados are less than fabulous, he was scraping the sides clean in minutes. Score.
I realize that avocado is a fruit not a vegetable, but it also happens to be one of the healthiest foods that we can eat. It’s heart healthy, it’s loaded with fiber and potassium, and it even improves your body’s ability to absorb nutrients from other foods when eaten together. Say what?! As if I needed another reason to eat guacamole by the spoonful.
This also works great as a frosting if you’re in need of something dairy free or want to make a healthier dessert. For a more pudding like consistency, add a tablespoon or two of water along with your ingredients to thin it out. A lot of recipes will call for almond milk or a similar non dairy milk, but unless you’re using a flavored milk (like vanilla) I personally think water works just the same- and it’s cheaper.

I love that you used coffee in this recipe. I made a chocolate cake recently where I used coffee and it made the chocolate taste richer, with a deeper chocolate flavor.
Sarah says
I didn’t even think of that to be honest, but now that you mention it I’ve been adding a bit of coffee to chocolate-y things and I have definitely noticed things tasting richer. It’s official – coffee makes everything better!

Thanks, Cristie! I love it without the espresso powder, but I thought I’d thrown on my own little spin with it…coffee + chocolate = love

First, I just want to say that I’m totally with you on avocados. Love them. But I never thought of using them as an ingredient for dessert. By the looks of this mousse though, I think you’re totally on to something and I really need to expand my avocado eating horizons!! Looks delicious!
Sarah says
Gotta love avocados! You should totally do it – it’s so easy and you’re never know it was in there! It’s great for kids too I think because it’s a really easy way to get them to eat foods they might not otherwise like
