No need to miss out on taco Tuesday due to diet restrictions if you learn how to make your own low FODMAP taco seasoning mix at home!
Unlike standard grocery store seasoning packets or homemade traditional taco seasonings, this one is 100% onion & garlic powder free.
Ingredients
- Chilli Powder*
- Ground Cumin
- Dried Oregano
- Paprika
- Salt
- Cayenne (optional)
*What type of chili powder to use:
Did you know that chili powder is not a single spice, but a blend of several spices?
Store-bought chili powder (like store bought taco seasoning) almost always has garlic and/or onion. Fortunately, it’s actually quite easy to make your own low fodmap friendly version at home!
You’ve got 2 options for the chili powder:
- Use ancho chili powder: made from 100% ground up ancho chili pepper.
- Use a low FODMAP chili powder: also made with ancho chilis + a blend of other FODMAP friendly spices rather than a single spice.
BTW: If you’re new to the Low FODMAP Diet, you may want to consider checking out the Monash Fodmap App created by Monash University. It is a paid app, but I’ve found the ingredient database incredibly helpful for staying on top basic low FODMAP information like serving sizes and low fodmap ingredients.
Other Ingredient Notes
- Paprika: Feel free to use any type – regular paprika (sweet), hot, or smoked paprika. Use one variety of a mix of the different types.
- Oregano: Mexican oregano (bold & peppery) is the more technically correct choice. However, regular Mediterranean oregano (light & herby) is also a great option.
- Cayenne: Add cayenne pepper if you want to add a bit of heat to your spice blend.
- Cayenne is Low FODMAP (1 tsp max per serving), but keep in mind your personal taste preferences and tolerance for spicy food.
